Levulan acne treatment is a topical treatment of aminolevulinic acid that is typically combined with blue light laser therapy to treat acne. Levulan is a material that is normally found in minute amounts in the body. Once
Levulan has been put on the skin and absorbed, it is changed into an effective photosensitizer, protophorphyrin IX. Since Levulan soaks into actinic keratoses and sebaceous glands it carefully aims towards them. The blue light laser then stimulates the protophorphyrins, implementing the reduction of the targeted tissues. By reducing the sebaceous glands, acne is eliminated.

A person may notice some difference after just one Levulan acne treatment, but typically it takes 2 to 4 treatments, a month apart, before results can be seen.  This treatment can eliminate or stop acne for up to a year, but results tend to differ from person to person.

For treatment, you will need to arrive at your cosmetic dermatologist’s office an hour before your procedure.  The Levulan will be applied to the surface of the treatment area and will take 30 to 60 minutes to soak in.  Then the blue light laser therapy takes an additional 15 minutes or more depending on the number of areas being treated.

After the procedure the treated areas may be red for a couple of hours or a couple of days, making you appear as if you have been sunburned.  Your skin may also peel, but this goes away within 1 to 7 days following treatment.
